Class: College Prep Biology
Unit: “Genetics”
Topic: Replication: prokaryotic vs eukaryotic

Instructional Objectives: Students should be able to…
  • Students will be able to identify where DNA replication takes place in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
  • Students will be able to identify eukaryotic DNA from prokaryotic DNA by looking at its structure.
Opening:
"Looking at the KWL chart that we made in class, we can observe how large concepts can be broken down to understand processes more clearly. Today we are going to break down the concept of DNA replication in the form of a concept map."
Time:
Activity
9:00-9:10
9:11-9:14
9:15-9:50
I will review the previous days lesson and notes
I will explain to students the idea of a concept map
Students will work in pairs to create a concept map of DNA replication in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

Assignment:
  • Students construct a concept map of DNA replication in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells

Activity Materials Needed:
  • Computers
  • CMap tools

Resources Needed:
class notes and textbook

Closing:
"As we have demonstrated, concept maps help us make connections between big ideas and small details. The concept maps that we have made can visually demonstrate how all of this information is connected."
